Locally Made Low Cost OB Simulator for Common OB Emergencies: Our Project and Experience at OUMC Women's and Newborns' Services

Opportunities to manage simulated OB emergencies allow care team members to practice technical skills, refine communication, and perform problem solving within a margin of safety that helps prepare the care team for actual encounters. However, the cost of high fidelity simulators, construction, staffing and maintenance of simulation labs is a teaching method many hospitals cannot afford. One must also consider that a designated simulation lab does not allow observation of true randomly assigned work teams in the actual clinical setting.
Our poster describes how locally available material is utilized to design a portable working low cost obstetric simulator for conducting a variety of common OB emergencies. Through this innovation, we are able to conduct OB emergency drills on the OB units in the real work environment at any time. Currently, the simulator is used for eclampsia and shoulder dystocia drills. It is also designed to simulate obstetric hemorrhage. The model allows for NG placement, suctioning, intubation, IV placement, and other tasks. Simulation observers are able to see how well the team coordinates these activities and how accessible equipment and supplies are for the team on the unit. Information from the drill is used to identify and address such issues as communication, knowledge, clinical skills, and attitudes that residents and nurses of all experience levels exhibit as a care team during an emergency. By creating the opportunity to observe all factors that can effect patient safety, we are able to focus on systems and process issues that need correction in order to enhance the efficient conduct of emergency obstetric care.
