General Information - TOP

*Each year SOAP receives abstracts that cannot be accepted for review because Ethics Board or IRB approval has not been obtained. Examples of these types of studies include surveys, audits of practice at one or several institutions, education interventions in which clinicians are randomized or observed, etc. These "studies" are regarded as Human Subjects Research under US regulations and require approval or explicit waivers by IRBs or Ethics Boards or the equivalent. In general, this approval or waiver should be obtained before starting the work, but MUST be obtained before SOAP can consider your abstract. If you have any question about this policy or whether your work requires IRB/Ethics review, you may contact the Chair of the Research Committee, Richard Smiley, at rms7@cumc.columbia.edu.

Work presented at SOAP should not have been presented at a large meeting of anesthesiologists (ASA, IARS or World Congress would be obvious examples of large meetings) prior to the SOAP meeting, or published in a journal. The work MAY have been submitted for publication, but the publication date (online or in print) should be AFTER presentation at SOAP. Case reports previously presented as Medically Challenging Cases at the ASA Annual Meeting will be considered.

*I/we have obtained Institutional Review Board or Ethics Board approval for the work described in this protocol. Case Reports do not require IRB approval, but SOAP now requires IRB/Ethics Board review for all human subjects research submitted, including "audits."

Disclosure/Conflict of Interest Statements: - TOP

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) requires that SOAP/ASA ensure that the following decisions were made free of the control of a commercial interest. The ACCME defines a "commercial interest" as any entity producing, marketing, reselling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on patients. (Providers of clinical services directly to patients is not considered commercial interest).

a. Identification of CME needs;
b. Determination of educational objectives;
c. Selection and presentation of content;
d. Selection of all persons and organizations that will be in a position to control the content of CME;
e. Selection of educational methods;
f. Evaluation of the activity.

I agree to comply with ACCME Standards for Commercial Support regarding independence in planning CME activities as noted in the disclosure statement.

SOAP/ASA must be able to show that everyone who is in a position to control the content of an educational activity has disclosed, to the provider, all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest. The ACCME defines "relevant financial relationships" as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest. An individual must disclose to the learners any relevant financial relationship(s). If there are no relevant financial relationships, the learners must be informed that no relevant relationship exists.

An individual who refuses to disclose relevant financial relationships will be disqualified from being a planning committee member, a teacher, or an author of CME, and cannot have control of, or responsibility for, the development, management, presentation or evaluation of the CME activity.

SOAP/ASA will implement a mechanism to resolve all conflicts of interest before the educational activity takes place.

Do you, and/or an immediate family member (including your spouse or partner) have a financial relationship as described above?

If you answered "Yes", please complete below by inserting the relevant company name and checking the appropriate boxes.

Please note that at the recommendation of the Committee on Ethics, presenters should disclose all of the above information, (orally or via slide) at the start of the presentation.
