SOAP President’s Message

Lisa R. Leffert, M.D.
SOAP President

Welcome to the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia & Perinatology (SOAP), the premiere North American professional organization devoted to the safety and comfort of obstetric patients! SOAP brings together physician obstetric anesthesiologists, CRNAs, maternal fetal medicine experts and perinatologists to develop best practices for clinical care and cutting-edge research.

Whether you practice in a large academic medical center, or a small rural community hospital, you can enjoy the benefits of SOAP Membership, connecting you to a network of experts and like-minded professionals around the world. SOAP members have easy access to the society’s Consensus Statements, learning modules on maternal cardiac disease, management of hemorrhage and cardiac ultrasound, timely infographics and patient handouts. You can learn from the 2018 and 2019 Sol Shnider and Annual Meeting lecture videos, including the annual Gerald W. Ostheimer presentation summarizing the year’s literature and the applications to your practice.

The 2019 Annual Meeting  was a tremendous success, featuring over 900 attendees from more than 16 countries. Highlights included workshops on ultrasound (cardiac, neuraxial, airway, truncal, gastric) and simulation; case-based, interdisciplinary panels on the care of High Risk parturients with comorbid disease; and the always popular Clinical Track lectures. More than 300 abstracts were featured showcasing the latest in investigation and clinical care, culminating in Best Paper Awards in basic science and for a clinical outcome study and numerous other awards. We thank our generous meeting sponsors and encourage continued donation to the organization and to the SOAP Endowment Fund and its associated investigator grants. Planning is already underway for a spectacular 2020 meeting in Halifax featuring an expanded Clinical Track and problem based-learning discussion series, expert panels, skill building sessions and international symposiums.

In other SOAP news, 39 programs have now been designated as SOAP Centers of Excellence in recognition of their high level of labor and cesarean delivery care, emergency preparedness, expert staffing, and patient safety protocols. If you are not already a Center, we encourage you to review the criteria, consider applying and use SOAP as a resource to help you meet your challenges.

As SOAP moves into its 52nd year, we invite you to add your voice to this chorus of Maternal Safety and Comfort advocates and to speak up if you are already a member. Tell us what you know, what you see, and what you need!

I remain in service to you,

Lisa Leffert, MD
