SOAP President’s Message
Welcome to the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) – the premiere subspecialty organization for Obstetric Anesthesia in North America as we celebrate our 50th anniversary! Engage with SOAP to accomplish our mission of advancing the pregnancy-related health and outcomes of pregnant women and their newborn. Join our welcoming and highly interactive community of physician anesthesiologists, obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, other health care providers and basic scientists. Together, we accomplish our mission to promote: 1) high quality obstetric anesthesiology research, 2) education to members and non-members including other providers of peripartum care as well as pregnant women and 3) promotion of excellence in clinical anesthetic care in the peripartum period.
While SOAP was founded in 1968 by physician anesthesiologists with an interest in the subspecialty of obstetric anesthesia, our North American physician-based subspecialty organization has grown significantly, including a diverse group of international membership including of obstetricians, neonatologists, basic scientists, and other allied health professional interested in improving maternal and newborn outcomes.
SOAP’s annual scientific meeting is one of the world’s premier venues for presenting obstetric anesthesia and perinatal research and receiving education on the latest developments in obstetric anesthesia, obstetrics and neonatology, best evidence for high-risk clinical care, professional development and patient safety in the format of workshops, lectures, and small group discussions – relevant and crucial for both academic and private practitioners everywhere.
SOAP’s 50th annual meeting was a huge success, with almost 900 attendees from North America and across the globe. SOAP hosted our 4th Latin American Symposium and our 2nd Chinese Symposium on Obstetric Anesthesia. Our meeting had representatives from the Obstetric Anaesthetists Association (UK), Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine, World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists and many more international societies and individuals of national and international renown. The Surgeon General of the United States spoke on the national opioid crisis. The greatest strength of SOAP is its diverse members, a supportive community of extraordinarily talented, passionate and committed individuals.
Educational opportunities from SOAP include the annual Sol Shnider Meeting held in March in San Francisco, a popular venue to learn clinically relevant obstetric anesthesia topics by leading experts in the field. The newly revised SOAP website offers education for pregnant women, members and non-members, with important advisories, statements and clinical materials.
SOAP funds research through the SOAP Endowment Fund/Gertie Marx Endowment through the SOAP Young Investigator award, SOAP/Gertie Marx Education and Research Grant, and the SOAP/Kybele International Outreach Grant. These annual grants are given to qualified applicants for scholarly endeavors in research, education and international outreach that advance women’s health. I encourage you to contribute to the SOAP Endowment Fund to further to help advance research to benefit pregnant women and their newborns.
Don’t be left out – Become a member of SOAP to interact with your colleagues, enjoy many member benefits including gaining access to useful information, publications, patient educational materials and experts. Be part of the society that represents the subspecialty, being an integral part of a friendly interactive society that advances women’s health, improving the delivery of safe and effective pain relief during childbirth, improving the health and outcomes of women and their newborns in the peripartum period.
As president of SOAP, I am here to help SOAP as an organization, to help SOAP members, and to help all pregnant women and their newborns. Join SOAP and be part of the movement!
